Dwight was a twin, but he "resorbed" his twin while still in his mother's womb. He believes that he now has "the strength of a grown man and a little baby". He claims to have been born weighing 13lbs 5oz, rendering his mother incapable of walking for three months and two days. Dwight was shunned from his Morman family between the ages of four and six for forgetting to save the excess oil from a can of tuna. He lost a grade school spelling bee by misspelling the word "failure" in front of the entire school. In seventh grade, Dwight played the invented role of "Mutey the Mailman" in a production of Oklahoma!. He explains that there were not enough roles for all of the children, so they made up roles. Dwight's father — also named Dwight Schrute — battled high blood pressure and obesity all his life, but often went hunting with his son. Dwight's father would take him and his brothers to a swimming hole on hot summer days as a child until 10:00 AM, then they would work the beet fields until well after midnight.

Dwight's maternal grandfather, whose surname is Manheim, fought in World War II and killed twenty men before ending up in an Allied prison camp, which indicates that his grandfather was a German soldier. It has been implied that his grandparents were staunch supporters of the Nazi Party. People refer to Dwight's grandmother as a "Nazi war criminal". Dwight says that Grandpa Manheim is still alive at 103-years old, and relates his attempt to visit him in Argentina. His travel visa was protested by the Shoah Foundation. Dwight's paternal great-grandfather, Dweide Schrude, was Amish. Dwight arrived at the event wearing the tuxedo in which his grandfather was buried. A coffin is seen in the barn on the Schrute family farm. Dwight said that his grandfather was reburied in an old oil drum.

According to Dwight, he had an uncle named Gunther, a goat farmer, who fled the Allied invasion of Germany and married a Finnish woman with whom he had 17 children. He also had an Uncle Grit who revealed that the Schrute family has an on-going hatred of Harry S Truman because they were staunch supporters of Thomas Dewey. He also has a cousin named Heindl, who lost 12% of the hearing in her left ear because of a ninja. He also reveals he had an uncle who worked at Hershey Chocolate in Hershey, PA as a fudge packer, and he himself worked there as an intern one summer. Dwight lives in a nine-bedroom, one-bathroom farmhouse on his family's 60-acre beet farm with his cousin Mose, selling beets to local stores, restaurants and roadside beet stands. Dwight uses part of his farm to grow hemp, which a pizza delivery boy refers to as "crappy weed." Teenagers have been known to use the farm for sex. Dwight and Mose have also turned Schrute Farm into a very ramshackle bed & breakfast. The bed and breakfast has three theme rooms, "America, Nighttime, and Irrigation".

Although everything was going well with Dwight and Mose's B&B, Dwight decided that he was destined to be more than just an average hemp growing beet farmer. All through his childhood, Mose would come to him with problems that Dwight would solve. He was great at giving advice...or, he was in his opinion. So, Dwight went off to get his medical license to be a therapist. The thought came to him after one teenage boy came to him after trying to have sex with his girlfriend in the beet farm. Dwight had originally come out to try and scare them away with his Darth Vader costume and a glowing red plastic lightsaber, but all he found was the boy by himself looking miserable. The boy started apologizing, but then he began to tell Dwight about the problems he had with his girlfriend, how she was more experienced than he was, and how he couldn't...you know, perform. So, Dwight gave him advice. He talked him through his hard times, and told him to go and find his girlfriend, but just to think of someone else when things got hot and heavy (Only he didn't say 'hot and heavy' he said 'when doing the naughty'). Like Princess Lea. Or Uhura.

But, since this boy was obviously an idiot, he took this advice too far and called her 'Pamela', which made the girl break up with him. Even though the stupid boy had ruined everything, Dwight had given him fantastic advice. He realized that if the boy wasn't so dumb his plan would have worked! He was a GENIUS. This was what made him decide to become a doctor. If he could help some idiot boy, than the rest of the world needed his advice as well. So, he went to the local community college and got his Bachelor degree in Psychology before transferring to The University of Phoenix to get his Masters. He started out working in a mental institution, but received quite a few complaints from his patients for being rather judgmental, and didn't get to move up to a doctor position after being an intern for one year. Now, he is repeating his internship, but because the one doctor who he admired the most, Michael Scott, got transferred to Cheshire Crossing, he put in a request to be traded as well. They sent him out the next day.

While Dwight thinks that they were happy to send him off because he was such a good doctor, they were really just happy to get rid of him.
